So I’m finally starting a blog…
In the 16th century, Sir Francis Bacon wrote: Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man; and, therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory; if he confer little, he had need have a present wit; and if he read little, he had need have much cunning, to seem to know that he doth not.
It goes without saying, this quote has had a major impact on my life. I have always loved to read and to write. And I have always believed in touching others through my words. Which brings me to this: the reason for this blog and a little bit about myself.
A regular routine of mine as my children were growing up (as I am sure it is for many parents), was to sit besides them as they lulled themselves to sleep. This was also the time for me, when I could just relax, pick up my iPhone, and catch up with the events of the day. At first, it was mostly reading news articles, which soon began to get pretty drab, eventually turning into a hunt for blogs and informational websites that addressed our current personal situations and satisfied our intellectual and emotional curiosity. Over the years, I have come to realize, that at the end of a busy day, I do not want to be inundated with hate-filled diatribes or manipulated by the news of the day – but want to read something that is uplifting, that is positive, and that brings people together. Unfortunately, the internet thrives on hatred, division, and discord, and unsurprisingly has become an instrument fueling distrust and political, social and economic turmoil in our world. As a result, many have simply abandoned the social marketplace of free thought, expression, ideas and discussion, for fear of being misunderstood, maligned, and estranged from family and friends. It is so hard to find truly encouraging and uplifting material that individuals of various persuasions can find common ground with. So much harder to find goodness, kindness, and a thoughtful, respectful discussion of ideas. It is with that intent that I start this blog – my own small contribution to this effort.
Who am I? Professionally, I am a scientist and an educator. But I am also a father, a husband, and a friend. I am an immigrant and am also a citizen. A vociferous believer in science and also a person of faith. I love to read, cook, the outdoors, and nature. I love all things technology! Basically, I am just another average Joe…
In these pages, I hope to share with you reflections and perspectives, discuss ideas and events, pursue knowledge and science. My goal is to edify, uplift, and build bridges. As a molecular and cellular immunologist, I hope to discuss science and the latest advances in the field; as an educator, I hope to inspire students and folks interested in education; as a Christian, I would love to discuss philosophy and the intersection of faith and reason; as a parent, I look forward to discussing the joys ( and yes the travails!) of raising children; as a citizen, I hope to build and contribute to community. All in all, I hope that those who come here and ponder my random musings may find encouragement and inspiration, and hopefully a more positive avenue to bide their time, while they wait for their little one to sleep.
Disclaimer: I hope anyone perusing these pages understands that the views, opinions, and writings reflected here are solely my own and a product and innovation of my own mind; they do not represent any other person (unless explicitly stated or referenced), my place of work, or any other organization, that I may be affiliated with.
